Design & Technology Curriculum
Curriculum Statements for DT
Intent
- Through our Design and Technology curriculum we aim to allow children to use their imagination and creativity to research, design and make a range of products within a variety of contexts.
- Children will over time build and apply the knowledge and skills needed to design high quality products.
- They are given the opportunity each year to understand nutrition and learn how to cook.
- Through our DT curriculum our pupils develop skills to prepare them for the next stage of their learning and a range of future careers.
Implementation
- Within Design and Technology children will draw on skills within Mathematics, Art, Science and Computing. They will deepen their understanding and independence within all of these subject areas during their Design and Technology lessons
- Key vocabulary is identified and reinforced throughout lessons
- Teachers engage and reinforce children’s prior knowledge at the start of each topic and lesson.
- The curriculum utilises planning and resources from Projects on a page from the DT association.
- Children are given regular opportunities to develop their understanding of the technological world. We evaluate the design and technology of products past and present and the ways that these have influenced modern society. This allows our children to have a more critical approach to their own designs and creations.
- The children are encouraged to take risks when designing and making their products. Lessons are hands on and engaging, with the children having access to lots of resources and materials.
- They are encouraged to think critically in order to evaluate their past prototypes and when testing their current designs. This allows the children to build upon their artistic skills in designing and practical skills in making to become more resourceful.
Impact
- The children at Caldershaw have developed their imagination, their critical thinking and their understanding of the world around them through their love of Design and Technology.
- They can think innovatively about the world around them in order to design and develop their own products with a purpose in mind.
- At the end of KS2 they are ready to continue and build upon this in KS3.
