Music Curriculum
Curriculum Statements for Music
Intent
- Our music curriculum gives children the musical opportunities and experiences to create, play, perform and enjoy music and to develop the skills, to appreciate and find joy in a wide variety of musical forms.
- Through our music curriculum children will:-
- gain enjoyment, self-confidence and a sense of achievement through musical activities
- be aware of, understand and respond appropriately to music
- acquire musical skills and understanding of musical concepts through listening, performing and composing.
- develop their capacity to express ideas and feelings through the medium of sound.
Implementation
- In KS1 and KS2, we deliver a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum through our specialist music teachers from Rochdale Music Service (part of the GM Music Hub). In EYFS, the children experience musical opportunities within and across the curriculum.
- There is a clear, steady progression plan, both within each year and from one year to the next, ensuring consistent musical development.
- It includes many examples of music styles and genres from different times and places, explored through the language of music via active listening, performing and composing activities.
- Music is taught through a classroom-based, participatory and inclusive approach to music learning. Children are actively involved in using and developing their singing voices, using body percussion and whole-body actions, and learning to handle and play classroom instruments effectively to create and express their own and others’ music.
- Teachers engage and reinforce children’s prior learning at the beginning and during lessons.
- Through a range of whole class, group and individual activities, children have opportunities to explore sounds, listen actively, compose and perform and learn music specific vocabulary in a meaningful context.
- All children in Key Stage 2 also have an opportunity each year to learn a musical instrument through a term of learning during.
- Extra-curricular clubs such as our school choir and instrumental lessons enhance the curriculum on offer.
- Concerts and events take place regularly in school to further inspire children and allow them to share and celebrate their music making. We enhance the children’s experiences with trips to musical events to develop their musical and cultural abilities.
Impact
- All children will benefit from a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians.
- All children will learn to play a musical instrument through the Wider Opportunities Programme and be encouraged to join extra-curricular choirs, bands and orchestras run by Rochdale Music Service.
- Children’s self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement will increase.
- As children progress, they will develop a growing musical vocabulary that allows them to critically engage with music.
- All children will have many opportunities to celebrate their success and skills with their peers and wider audiences.
